Early Childhood
Belonging and learning from the earliest years
The early years are a time of rapid growth, discovery and learning. At Cambrai Primary School and Preschool, we work alongside families to support children from their earliest experiences through to the beginning of school and beyond.
Our early childhood programs create a welcoming pathway where children and families can connect with the school community, build relationships and develop confidence as learners.
In our small community setting, children and families quickly become known and valued members of the Cambrai learning community.
Growing with Cambrai
At Cambrai, families can connect with our learning community from the earliest years.
Our early childhood pathway includes:
This pathway allows children to become familiar with the school environment, build relationships with educators and develop a strong sense of belonging as they grow.
Playgroup
Our playgroup provides a welcoming space where young children and their families can explore, play and learn together.
Children participate in activities such as sensory play, creative experiences, stories and outdoor play while parents and carers connect with other families in the community.
Playgroup is often the first step in a child’s journey with Cambrai and helps children feel comfortable and familiar with the school environment.
Occasional Care
Cambrai Primary School offers an accredited Occasional Care program for children aged 2–5 years, delivered by qualified educators.
Occasional Care provides a supportive early learning environment where children can explore, play and interact with others while becoming familiar with routines and relationships within the school.
These experiences help children develop independence, social skills and confidence as they prepare for preschool.
Preschool – Ngawandi
Our Preschool, known as Ngawandi, provides a nurturing environment where children learn through play, exploration and discovery.
The name Ngawandi refers to the mound or nest of the Mallee Fowl — carefully built and tended so new life can grow. Like the Ngawandi nest, our preschool is a place where children feel safe, supported and encouraged as they begin their learning journey. This idea reflects our belief that learning begins with care, connection and a strong sense of belonging.
Learning experiences are guided by the Early Years Learning Framework, supporting children to develop:
- curiosity and creativity
- communication and language skills
- social and emotional confidence
- early literacy and numeracy understandings
- independence and problem-solving skills
Our preschool learning environment is designed to support exploration and development. The preschool area is connected to the junior primary learning space and includes a secure outdoor lawn and playground that encourages active play and discovery.
Learning Through Play
Play-based learning is central to early childhood education at Cambrai.
Through play, children explore ideas, develop relationships and learn how the world works. Educators observe children’s interests and guide learning experiences that support development across all areas.
These early learning experiences build strong foundations for future learning and help children develop confidence as capable learners.
A Smooth Transition to School
Being part of a Preschool–Year 6 site allows children to become familiar with the school environment and develop relationships with staff and students before beginning Reception.
This connection supports a smooth transition to school, helping children feel confident, capable and ready for the next stage of learning.
Partnerships with Families
Families play a vital role in children’s learning and development.
At Cambrai, we value strong partnerships with parents and carers. Through open communication and collaboration, we work together to support children as they grow into confident, capable learners who feel connected to their community.
